Julia Buntzel Miriam Rose Gronwald, weaving studio Berlin, Studio JUMI

Founded in 2022, Studio JUMI is a Berlin-based artist duo working at the interface of art, craft and design. In their joint work, the artists Julia Buntzel and Miriam Rose Gronwald are committed to the preservation of traditional hand-weaving as well as the further development of weaving as a visual art.

Coming from a very different background – Julia studied wood sculpture and fine arts, Miriam was a professional dancer – their interest in keeping the story of weaving alive, shaped their language as an artist duo.

Inspired by the renown Bauhaus School of the 1920s in Weimar, Germany and it’s weaving workshops, where female artists such as Anni Albers, Gunta Stölzl and Otti Berger combined the craft of hand-weaving with the language of modern art, they draw from this knowledge while seeking new forms and possibilities of the craft.

Characterized by austere lines and grids, the work of Studio JUMI negotiates between the confines of structure, space, and craftsmanship. The viewer is invited into the dialogue between the beauty of the material and the systematic, meditative repetition of the weaving process.

As an artist duo, Julia and Miriam aim to create unique works of art that transform our traditional notions of a textile, by continuing to push the boundaries of weaving, through fragmenting, dissolving, and condensing the grid-like structure of the woven fabric.
